The Binford Reading series is a group of readings/talks held at Marylhurst on a regular basis. They are free to the public and the next installment is this Monday at 7:30 p.m. (they are held in the Old Library, BP John Administration Building on the Marylhurst campus).
Normally I don’t bring these up since they tend to be of minor interest (if any); however, for this installment they have William Kuskin coming in to talk about comics and graphic novels as literary objects.
The following is part of the blurb I received from Meg Roland (the English Department Chair at Marylhurst University), emphasis added:
Literary critic William Kuskin presents a talk on comics and graphic novels as literary objects. Dr. Kuskin, an associate professor of English at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is the editor of the forthcoming special issue of English Language Notes entitled “Graphia: Literary Criticism and the Graphic Novel” (ELN 46.2). Dr. Kuskin is also the author of “Symbolic Caxton: Literary Culture and Print Capitalism” and editor of “Caxton’s Trace: Studies in the History of English Printing.”
Hope to see some of you there!
Cheers!

So, the gang over at HalfPixel (composed of PVP - Scott Kurtz, Sheldon - Dave Kellett, Evil Inc. - Brad Guiger, and StarSlip Crisis - Kris Straub) have been able to pickup the domain, webcomics.com.
This is very cool since they are using the site to continue work from their book, “How to Make Webcomics.” Probably the best part about the site is that others can submit articles for inclusion. This opens the door to really make this a primer place to go for knowledge on this new medium.
I’m hoping this takes off. We could use such a central hub for our industry. You never know, I might try to get an article up there someday.

4Komatose is a webcomic produced by Michael Dozark and Scott Rogers (a couple of colleagues of mine). It is also a comic that I was loosely affiliated with during its earlier years.
It may have taken them over a year, but they have released a new comic! Hopefully a good sign to come since I’ve been interested to see what they do with it and where they plan on going (for my two cents though, I hope they stop directly referencing the comic for their material for a while since they seem to have generally been stuck in “placeholder” mode for quite some time).
Now, if we can just get them to release a comic with a bit more regularity. Maybe once a month? Perhaps? Hopefully?!
It’s generally worth checking out, so go check it out already! We goblins already have too much to do without escorting you people around! So move! Go on! You won’t be sorry! We prom… ah… we think you’ll have a good time… yeah!

Starting today I will be upgrading the comic to a three times a week affair. So, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, you will be treated to a new page!
I’ve been able to hit the twice a week schedule really well so far, and I want to speed things up a bit. At my current rate I can finish a page a day, so three times a week should work well with my current comfort and technical level.
Cheers!

Wolfgang Engel takes a few moments to ponder about the constant need to develop for the new technologies in hardware, especially graphics.
It’s short, but an important thought. Idealism meets Realism. In a nutshell his last paragraph sums it up best:
So how important is it if we program a CPU/SPU/GPU or whatever we call the next thing. Give me a washing machine with a display and I make an entertainment machine with robo rumble out of it.
